That is how strawberries propagate themselves. They are called runners. You can cut them off or make sure they are touching the soil and those runners will root.

More plants. If you want more let them grow a bit bigger and then cut the runner from the mother plant.

Everything those guys said ^ and also make sure you stay on top of them, they propagate like crazyyyyyy and your space will become overrun and not in a good way lol I can tell you from experience after neglecting them one I got my crop, and by fall I had 3x more plants, very crowded

I planted a bunch of strawberries last summer to no avail. Fast forward to this summer and they’re fruiting. I didn’t touch them all winter

  5. FYI conventional wisdom is to cut all runners on first year plants so your plants can focus on roots and berries.

You can cut them off and propagate them and plant them somewhere else if you really want to but you will have more than you can plant.

Next year you can let your mature strawberry plants grow runners and spread if you want.

Strawberries send out runners and eventually the mama plant poisons itself. I leave runners through the winter then dig them all up in spring and plant where I want them.

Runners, you want them as the spread the plants out to fill up the area.

As others have said, let the runners root and then cut that umbilical cord. You can also take runners and sell those babies to feed your farm habits.

Mine are doing that! OOOOOOH I didn’t know there was anything to do, but I am going to figure out something tomorrow. SO EXCITED FOR BERRIES!

can wait a bit. if they find dirt, they’ll send out roots. once they have a lil roots can cut it from the mother plant, and congrats you have a new strawberry plant.

to a certain degree you want to manager the runners, as the more energy the plant puts into sending out runners and developing them, the less it’s doing leaves, flowers, fruit.

Do you need to trim them? That depends on how many plants you want next year. As you can see there are new plants sprouting on the ends of those runners.

Actually these plants are Borg. You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile.

    Magically multiply your growth potential

It’s good to rotate your strawberries. Individuals plants are only productive for a few years, so you should take out older established ones and let the runners become the new plants.

  15. your 3 plants are looking to become 30. let them root and grow then at the end of the season dig everything up, cut the connections between plants, and now you’ve got an overloaded plot of strawberries.

They’re called runners, but I think I like “extenders” better

  17. ‘Extenders’ is such an awesome name for them.

I had a volunteer strawberry in a raised bed last year. I don’t grow strawberries. It didn’t make berries but it did make about ten new plants. I snipped them off, planted them, and have free strawberries ripening as we speak ☺️

  19. Battleaxe1959

Those are going to start free strawberry plants.

As others said. It’s the coolest thing ever. I have a 8×4 section that started as one plant and they just keep rocking it every year.

They’re called “runners” and the vine will continue growing until the plant fies or you stop it. It cuts a lot of time put of expanding your growth. A plant won’t produce berries until the second year and these give you a big head start. Eventually the vine will produce a plant every foot or so and then roots will develop. I like to position them where I want them, holding them in place somehow and they will root right in. Then when you are satisfied with the number of plants you want from the vine and its plants are rooted in you just cut the vine from its mother. One healthy plant will produce multiple runners. I grow in stair step planters and they I can put plants where I want by using the runners. I’m about to start giving plants to my neighbors because the runners never stop producing

You start planning a strawberry social of course

    So random strawberry situation.
I accidentally planted a borage herb/beautiful flowering plant in my strawberry patch. Best strawberries ever! And well borage is really fantastic at replanting itself with its seeds so always there. However flowers are edible and used for teas. So win/win??

Cut them in this moment, at the end of the season, you can let it grow, but the plant must be focussed in fruits now. Almost in my area
